CNRS Physics and KITP Establish FACTS

Research Article published on 01 March 2024 , Updated on 01 March 2024

CNRS Physics announces the establishment of the French-American Center for Theoretical Science (FACTS), a new International Research Laboratory (IRL) in collaboration with the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara (KITP).

Led by Lucile Savary (CNRS) and Boris Shraiman (KITP), FACTS will focus on theoretical physics, specifically in classical and quantum condensed matter, statistical physics, and biophysics.

This collaboration allows for up to three additional permanent members, chosen from tenured researchers at CNRS or other French institutions via a CNRS delegation. These members will commit to assignments lasting at least six months, actively participating in the scientific community at KITP and the Santa Barbara site.

Inaugural assignments are planned for the fall of 2024, with the potential for later commencement. Researchers interested in contributing to this initiative can submit their CVs and a brief research project outline, indicating the intended assignment period, to bertrand.georgeot@cnrs.fr before March 31, 2024.

FACTS operates independently of KITP's workshop-driven events. A steering committee, comprising three representatives from CNRS and three from KITP, will select individuals for FACTS assignments twice a year.

This collaboration aims to facilitate theoretical research and international scientific exchange in the field of condensed matter physics.
